The Silent Flute

This one has to be my favourite poem of Bruce Lee’s ❤️️

I wish neither to possess
Nor be possessed
I no longer covet paradise
More important, I no longer fear hell

The medicine for my suffering
I had within me from the very beginning,
But I did not take it

My ailment came from within myself
But I did not observe it
Until this moment

Now I see that I will never find the light
Unless, like the candle, I am my own fuel,
Consuming myself

~ Bruce Lee

A true inspiration ❤️️

Great mentors and teachers ❤️

‘Better than a thousand days of study is one day with a great teacher.’ ~ Japanese Proverb

This post is dedicated to the loving memory of Sigung Richard Bustillo who passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning

I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have been blessed with some really great teachers, ones who’ve not only taught me how to improve my external world but often more importantly my inner world.

I treasure every single teacher and mentor I have and have ever had because I recognise the value that they bring to my life. In how they have helped me see things differently and achieve things I may never have otherwise achieved

Without great teachers we can never grow to become the person we really want to be and understand things we may have never otherwise understood.

The value of great teachers can really be underestimated and all of us can benefit from a great teacher because we are always learning.

As the Japanese proverb states even just one day spent with a great teacher can be immensely powerful.

I’d like to dedicate this post to loving memory of one great teacher, Sigung Richard Bustillo a teacher who I spent a truly valuable weekend training with last year.

Richard Bustillo was a student and personal friend of Bruce Lee and also a teacher of Bruce Lee’s own art of Jeet Kune Do.

To be able to train with Richard Bustillo last year was a true gift and a time I will never forget; his spirit, energy and teachings inspired me greatly. I will always remember those treasured days in 2016 and I’m forever grateful for the opportunity to be taught by him.

RIP Richard Bustillo ❤️

Jkd

Jkd is nothing
It’s a being
A process
That lies in the space in between
Therefore it can not be seen or described
Because it is in fact a liberation
It’s a pairing of opposites-
In order to find the centre
The space
That which exists in between everything;
That is everything
And therefore it is nothing
It is not a system, yet it is
A style that is not a style
Don’t get hung up on it
It’s one with everything
This is how it liberates
And why the teacher is only the pointer

The way of water

To be like water
As it flows with the way
Whatever is in front of it
It knows its own way
Moving around over or under
Beyond any obstacle it may face,
Knowing where it’s heading;
It always finds a way
Nothing ever stops it;
Nothing gets in the way
It simply moulds itself
To the way it wishes to take
Moving around, over or under,
Never failing , Always finding;
Flowing with the way 💕

Quote

Walk on

IMG_2077.JPG

‘Why add tension of emotion/thought to a situation which is illusion, to the extent that it is real, of a passing moment?

Do what seems wise to be done,
Forget it and walk on.
Walk on and see a new view,
Walk on and see the birds fly,

Walk on and leave behind all things that would damn up the inlet,
Or clog the outlet, of experience’

– Bruce Lee –

Expansion

Learning, growing, deeply flowing
Letting go of all that got in the way

Being you
Always true

Seeing how it is,
You’re not here to impress;
You are here to expand

To always grow,
Continually flow

Finding your way,
Come what may
Where nothing will stop you

You’re finding your balance
So all sides are even

Drop all expectations
As they will too

It works both ways man,
Adapt and flow

What would water do?

Thinking on some recent challenges and how to overcome them,
I thought of Bruce Lee’s words,

‘Be like water’

and came up with the following, on the way of least resistance. 💗

What would water do

What would water do,
It never holds or clings
It flows, it moves, it adapts,
Never resisting
Simply going with where it is
Flowing,
Always finding the way 💗

Discipline and focus

Discipline and focus allow for effective learning and adaptability in flow. If not for the discipline and structure then focus is scattered. There is then a lack of awareness and therefore inability to adapt, flow and grow efficiently in practice.

The discipline and structure should be aligned accordingly in order to learn the next step and movement. The adaptability that comes with it allows for necessary training and new things to be learnt with the awareness to apply where most appropriate.

If the ego or prior knowledge gets in the way then there is lack of awareness and an inability to adapt and learn effectively.

Without sufficient respect for the teacher/ mentor nothing can actually be learnt. Because of this the whole mind should be emptied and full awareness applied each and every time one is being taught.

The teachers knowledge is rightly far beyond what the student knows, therefore full awareness, discipline, respect and focus is always required.

Sidenotes

– Emptying your cup allows for full focus
– Self discipline is essential in order to learn and execute fully
– Without full focus one cannot learn and execute fully
– With full focus can adapt accordingly- when something is not working then have the awareness to change it. To be like water, adapt and flow.
– Discipline also shows respect to the art and teacher, also clearing the mind allowing for learning.
